We are currently working on the restoration of Casa Cabanela, known locally as La Base, a Modernist building in A Coruña’s Pescadería neighbourhood. Designed by Julio Galán Carvajal in 1911 and listed under the PEPRI heritage framework, the building occupies a prominent corner on Praza de San Andrés, with three public façades that speak to its long civic role as a commercial and urban landmark.
Our approach begins with a thorough understanding of the existing fabric: its composition, history of transformations, structure, services and construction, before defining the scope of intervention. The intention is to preserve and celebrate the building’s architectural character whilst exploring the boundaries in terms of improved sustainability and energy performance for its renovation.
The project is being designed as a flexible spatial framework that can accommodate a range of uses over a long period of time, with an open programme that restores the building’s relationship with the square and the public life of the city.
